Bookshop guide: Long Hwee Book Store

Chapter: City Rounds

One of oldest still-standing bookshops on our island is definitely Long Hwee Book Store. It opened at the end of the 1960s and even though the retail space has shrunk more than half compared to its heyday, the owner Madam Ker’s big smile has not. She greeted me as I made my way into the store recently. A lady and a kid were also in the shop.

Small shop with warm hospitality.

As you know, I’ve always love a cramped (and least-modern) shop, bookstore or not, so I didn’t mind the narrow browsing space. But I did have a hard time taking stock of the products lining the shelves, on the counter and hanging from above. My head was spinning just looking at all the stuff.

A coin phone and an interactive musical card.

So I don’t have a list of happy buys but what I do like is the birthday musical card displayed outside the shop. And their wrapping papers were cute too.
