Yan can cook + China

[Chapter: Food]

Every month through snail mail I will receive a newsletter on China which I’ve subscribed to for many many years now. The mostly text-based newsletter has news and prayer requests related to China. It is through this publication that I read about the various minority tribes, one of which is the Mosuo people, unique for their matriarchal society. I have not seen any pictures of them before…until last Thursday when I watched Martin Yan’s China on TV.

I’m sure you know Martin Yan from ‘Yan Can Cook’. I’m always anticipating his sign off catchphrase “If Yan can cook so can you”. He’s such a master with astounding knife skills. I had tried to imitate the way he smashes garlic into minced garlic in nanoseconds, but I think only Yan can do it. Anyway in that episode he visited the Mosuos living on the banks of Lugu Lake in Yunnan. I was excited to “meet” them and see the way they live, dress and of course “meet” the head of a particular family, who is a grandma.

Dear Clara, I have seen him doing his shows ages ago and this guy never grows old…seemed eternally young! If I chopped the garlic like him, maybe I will have one finger less..no kidding haha :D

I like such shows where we not only learn about cooking, but get to experience the local culture as well.
